Ceramic Pottery Kilns

An essential item for all ceramic pottery making is a kiln for firing your ceramic pottery pieces. Pottery requiring glazing need to be fired twice.

The first firing or “bisque” firing sets the clay and changes it from a raw natural dry clay state to a hardened ‘biscuit’ state. A bisque fired piece of ceramic pottery is porous and not water-proof at this stage so glazing, the application of glass in liquid suspension, and another kiln firing is required.

Bisque firing in the kiln is at a lower temperature than the final firing after the glaze has been applied.
