Pottery Wheel
The pottery wheel revolutionized the way ceramic pottery was made, although the hand turned wheel was used for centuries before mechanization began with the industrial revolution.
For many years the ‘treadel’ or ‘kick’ wheel was used which required the potter to move the wheel by using a kicking motion on the foot swing arm.
This is still my favorite way to turn pots as I find the hypnotic rhythm required quite relaxing. This was the first type of wheel I was introduced to in my high school years so i guess you could say that it is my first love.
Of course modern pottery wheels are now motorized and run on electricity. The speed of the wheel is determined by pressure applied to the foot pedal in much the same manner as an electric sewing machine.
There are some good videos showing how to use the pottery wheel.
